Ca man sold his daughter for beer
Okay so I'm sure that headline caught everyones attention, however it is slightly more complicated then that. Both the bride to be and the groom are from the state os Oaxaca in Mexico where arranged marriages are common, the money is intended as a dowry for the bride and the meat and beer are for the wedding reception. The problem which occured is the father alerted the authroties when the soon to be newleyweds left town. The daughter is only 14 and under the age of consent in california, mind you the girl entered the arrangement willing. So now all these groups are "weighing in" on the situation, and quiet frankly they have no understanding of the culture practices of this particular group. The police in the area are actually more understanding of the situation then the activst groups who are speaking out against it.

Stuff
So everybody knows I'm a wee bit accident prone, lets be honest I fall quite often, I tripped standing yesterday. (its okay you can laugh) So on the first day of the semester, I managed with assistance from Adam to slam my finger in Kobie's car door. I know great way to start the new semester off right? So anyway, they took me to the emergency room, and I got liquid stitches on my finger. But prior to that we bought are tickets for spring break. I'm super excited to go to Paris and Ireland for spring break. So I figure everything kind of evened out considering, the awesome ticket buying experience, coupled with the emergency room trip. The best part is, the finger is my right index finger, and my handwriting is unreadable on a good day, so go ahead and feel bad for my students, since there is no tech cart in the room I teach in and I use the overhead projector. There will be a large amount of squinting. Speaking of teaching, I got the usual looks of despair when I informed the class they will need to bring a basic calculator to class with them each week. I think the students assume since it is an anthropology class, that it will be easy, what they don't realize, at least the students how are taking it as a gen ed class, is that is actually probably harder then a regular science class since we cover so much material.
